In a significant move to enhance the safety of its younger users, Instagram is introducing new content restrictions for accounts belonging to individuals under 18. By default, these accounts will now only display content that aligns with PG-13 movie ratings, effectively shielding teens from exposure to extreme violence, sexual nudity, and graphic drug use. Users will not be able to alter this setting without explicit parental consent. Additionally, Instagram is implementing a stricter content filter known as Limited Content, which will prevent teens from seeing or posting comments on content that has this filter activated. The platform is also blocking inappropriate content in direct messages and restricting the discovery of accounts that share age-inappropriate material. These changes come amid increasing scrutiny of social media's effects on youth and follow similar actions taken by other tech companies to protect underage users.
