On November 28, 2025, the World Health Organisation (WHO) introduced its first global guidelines to tackle infertility, a condition affecting one in six individuals worldwide. The guidelines consist of 40 recommendations aimed at enhancing prevention, detection, and treatment of infertility. WHO's head of sexual and reproductive health, Pascale Allotey, highlighted the inequities in access to safe and affordable care. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 12 months of regular unprotected intercourse, leading to emotional distress and financial burdens for many. In some regions, the costs of treatments like In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) can exceed annual household incomes. The guidelines advocate for integrating fertility into national health funding and services, improving clinical management, and addressing risk factors such as untreated sexually transmitted infections and smoking. The WHO also emphasizes the need for better male infertility diagnoses and increased investment in preventive measures.
