Spain is witnessing a significant growth in renewable energy, particularly through community-driven initiatives. The cooperative Taradell Sostenible, formed in a small Catalan town, supplies affordable electricity to over 100 households, including those in financial need. With government support, they have installed solar panels on local buildings. The removal of the 'sunshine tax' in 2018 has led to a 17-fold increase in solar installations. The IDAE is now focusing on energy communities, allocating €148.5 million for 200 projects aimed at providing cheap electricity to low-income households. This approach not only addresses fuel poverty but also enhances energy self-sufficiency and reduces reliance on traditional energy sources. Other regions, like the island of Ons, are also set to benefit from similar initiatives, promoting localized energy solutions.
