Vietnam flood death toll rises to 35: disaster agency
Why it matters
Central Vietnam is currently facing catastrophic flooding due to record heavy rains, with the death toll rising to 35 and five individuals still unaccounted for. The Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority reported that the floods have inundated over 16,500 homes and affected more than 100,000 residences overall. The flooding has also devastated local agriculture, with over 40,000 livestock lost and more than 5,300 hectares of cropland submerged. Residents in Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site, have been navigating waist-deep waters, expressing shock at the severity of the flooding. Experts attribute the increasing intensity of such extreme weather events to human-driven climate change, which is making storms and floods more deadly. In 2025 alone, Vietnam has experienced 12 typhoons or tropical storms, significantly impacting the region.
