Hina Mir, a Labour Party councillor and former Deputy Mayor of Hounslow, was fined £40,000 after losing an appeal against an immigration law violation. She hired 22-year-old Himanshi Gongley, an Indian student without legal work rights, for £1,200 a month. The City of London County Court heard that Mir kept Gongley on call 24 hours a day for six days a week to care for her children. Despite Mir's claims that Gongley was a social visitor, the U.K. Home Office revealed that Gongley had flagged down a police car for help, expressing distress and alleging physical abuse. The judge noted inconsistencies in Mir's evidence, leading to skepticism about her claims.
