The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Centre to revisit its 2020 electric vehicles policy, known as the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) 2020. The court noted that significant changes have occurred in the last five years that should be incorporated into the policy. Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi emphasized the need for a pilot project in a metropolitan city to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). The Attorney General mentioned that 13 ministries are currently deliberating on the policy's feasibility. The court also pointed out the necessity of addressing incentives for EV adoption, the establishment of charging infrastructure, and the role of government institutions in promoting EVs. The public interest litigation filed by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) seeks to expedite the implementation of the EV policy to protect citizens' rights to a clean environment.
