A What happened
A private bus travelling from Shimla to Kupvi via Rajgarh veered off the road near Haripurdhar village in Himachal Pradesh’s Sirmaur district and fell into a more than 100-metre gorge around 2:45 p.m. on January 9, 2026. At least 14 passengers were killed and 33 were injured, with around 45 passengers on the bus. The injured were taken to hospitals in Haripurdhar and Nahan, and seriously injured patients were referred to IGMC in Shimla. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ex gratia payments of ₹2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and ₹50,000 to the injured, and an investigation was stated to determine the cause.
