The United Nations has announced that one million Syrian refugees have returned to Syria since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. Alongside this, 1.8 million internally displaced individuals have also returned to their original areas. Despite this hopeful development, the UNHCR warns that returnees are confronted with numerous challenges, including destroyed homes, inadequate infrastructure, and limited job opportunities. Currently, over seven million Syrians remain displaced within the country, and more than 4.5 million are still abroad. The UNHCR calls for increased investment in stabilization efforts and humanitarian support to ensure that returns are safe and sustainable. A recent survey indicates that a significant majority of Syrian refugees wish to return home, highlighting the urgent need for continued assistance to both returnees and host countries.
