A What happened
The Odisha government has launched a revised Maoist surrender and rehabilitation policy to combat left-wing extremism in the state. This updated policy increases financial assistance for surrendered Maoists, with category A individuals receiving up to ₹5 lakh and category B individuals receiving ₹2.5 lakh. The policy also incentivizes the surrender of weapons, offering substantial rewards for those who surrender firearms in working condition. For example, surrendering an AK-47 can yield ₹3.3 lakh. Additionally, active surrendered Naxalites with a reward of ₹5 lakh or more will receive a fixed deposit of ₹10 lakh, which will be accessible after three years, contingent on good behavior. The initiative aims to provide gainful employment and entrepreneurial opportunities to former extremists, reducing the likelihood of their return to violence.
