Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has taken a strong stance on promoting hydrogen fuel as a solution to Delhi's severe air pollution. He recently revealed his personal use of the Toyota Mirai, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, during a session in the Lok Sabha. The Indian government is prioritizing alternative fuels to reduce the country's heavy dependence on fossil fuel imports, which amount to approximately Rs 22 lakh crore annually. Gadkari believes that transitioning to indigenous, pollution-free fuels will not only help combat air pollution but also enable India to become a net exporter of energy. He noted that India's automotive industry has grown to the third largest in the world and expressed optimism that with advancements in electric vehicles, India could soon lead the global automotive market. The government is also working on policies to incentivize the use of bio-fuels and alternative energy sources.
