A What happened
The National Green Tribunal said a ‘Tent City’ set up on the Ganga riverbed in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh in 2023 was established and operated in violation of environmental norms and the River Ganga (Rejuvenation, Protection and Management) Authorities Order, 2016. The tribunal said environmental compensation had been levied for the violations but not recovered, and said it must be recovered expeditiously. The Principal Bench heard an application alleging the tent city polluted the riverbed and river water, harmed flora and fauna, and discharged sewage directly into the river. A National Mission for Clean Ganga report said the application for prior approval was made after the project had already been implemented in 2022.
