New arrangements should preserve Nairobi’s much-loved Karura Forest
Why it matters
Karura Forest, a vital green space in Nairobi, faced a management crisis when the Kenya Forest Service announced a change in its partnership with the Friends of Karura Forest. Following public backlash, the decision was reversed, allowing the community-led initiative to continue its successful restoration efforts. Over the past 15 years, this partnership has increased indigenous plant cover from 25% to 60% and created a habitat for various wildlife species. The initiative also employs over 35 staff and engages around 300 local community members in reforestation projects. The forest serves as a recreational area for thousands of visitors each month, highlighting the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts.
