The Mamirauá Declaration was introduced at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil to unify global efforts in monitoring and protecting the Amazon Rainforest. This agreement emphasizes the active involvement of Indigenous peoples and local communities in conservation efforts. It aims to consolidate various long-term initiatives into a streamlined framework for data gathering and analysis. The declaration was signed by thirty organizations, including the Mamirauá Institute and New York University. It promotes local data analysis and infrastructure development, addressing the historical trend of Global North institutions analyzing data from the Global South. The initiative will be rolled out in three phases, starting with understanding existing governance structures. Challenges include securing funding and fostering international cooperation. The hope is to create a platform for real-time biodiversity information in the Amazon within five years.
