On September 25, 2025, Meta announced the global expansion of its Teen Accounts feature on Facebook and Messenger, which was previously available only in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada. The accounts are designed to enhance safety for younger users by incorporating built-in protections and parental controls. Teens under 16 must obtain parental permission to modify account settings, and they will only receive messages from known contacts. Additionally, their stories will be visible only to friends, and interactions such as tags and comments will be restricted. Users will also receive reminders to limit their daily usage to one hour and will be enrolled in 'Quiet mode' overnight. However, a recent study by a Meta whistleblower indicated that teens may still encounter harmful content despite these protections. In conjunction with this rollout, Meta introduced a School Partnership Program to allow educators to report safety concerns directly to Instagram.
