In a significant discovery, researchers from the Botanical Survey of India have identified a new species of fungus, Bridgeoporus kanadii, in the forests of Arunachal Pradesh, India. This species is remarkable for its exceptionally large fruiting bodies, with the largest recorded at over three meters in radius. The researchers, led by Arvind Parihar, encountered the fungus during a monsoon season survey, finding clusters on old-growth fir trees. While known to local communities, B. kanadii is not harvested due to its inedibility. The team conducted detailed morphological analyses and DNA sequencing to confirm its status as a new species. This discovery adds to the limited knowledge of the Bridgeoporus genus, which previously included only two species. B. kanadii plays a crucial role in forest regeneration by decomposing dead wood, highlighting the ecological importance of fungi in nutrient cycling and forest health.
