The Karnataka Transport Department launched an AI-based Smart Enforcement System targeting traffic violations at 60 high-risk locations across multiple districts, including Davangere, Dharwad, Kalaburagi, and others. Locations were chosen based on Blackspot data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and specific accident records from the Integrated Road Accident Database. The system uses AI-enabled smart cameras installed on major routes to monitor vehicle operations, especially commercial vehicles, to automatically detect violations and generate digital challans. These challans are sent to offenders' registered email and mobile numbers with secure access to photographic or video evidence supporting the offense. All camera data converge to a centralized State Control Room where it is analyzed for actionable intelligence to strengthen road safety enforcement. This technology-driven approach aims to streamline enforcement, reduce manual processes, and accelerate resolution of cases. The Smart Enforcement Project includes a robust ICT-enabled WAN network, unifying assets and control operations on a single platform with integrated digital payment mechanisms. The design also considers future expansions such as smart parking violation detection, coordination with traffic and civil police, integration with emergency response and disaster management systems, and connectivity with judicial processes including e-courts. Enhanced video analytics support and management capabilities are also planned under the system.
