Why it matters
Union minister Pralhad Joshi announced that India is now the world's fourth-largest renewable energy producer, boasting a capacity of 257 GW, up from 81 GW in 2014. The solar energy sector has seen a dramatic increase, with capacity rising from 2.8 GW to 128 GW. India has also achieved its Nationally Determined Contribution target of 50% capacity from non-fossil sources five years ahead of the 2030 deadline. The country’s renewable energy tariffs are among the lowest globally, showcasing its ability to deliver clean energy efficiently. The International Energy Agency predicts India will become the second-largest renewable market, while the Climate Change Performance Index ranks it among the top performers. Despite these advancements, challenges remain in ensuring equitable access to electricity, particularly in underdeveloped regions. India is also contributing to the Africa Solar Facility to support renewable investments in Africa, emphasizing its commitment to global energy equity.
