The Mayiladuthurai-Tharangambadi Train Restoration Committee has reiterated its demand for the revival of the 30-km railway line that connects Mayiladuthurai to Tharangambadi, with an extension to Thirunallar. During a recent meeting with Governor R.N. Ravi, committee members emphasized the line's potential to significantly boost tourism in the Cauvery delta region. The railway line, which operated from 1926 until its closure in 1986, is seen as a heritage route with substantial tourism potential. The committee highlighted that a survey conducted by the Railways in 2006-07 and 2010 confirmed the feasibility of the project, yet it remains pending with the Railway Board. The proposed 11-km extension would facilitate a circular rail link, connecting major pilgrimage centers of various religions, thereby promoting economic growth. The committee also noted that land acquisition should not be an issue, as ample railway-owned land is available for the project.
