Regional authorities in Andalusia reported that at least 40 people died after two high-speed trains collided around 7:40 pm Sunday near the town of Adamuz in the province of Córdoba. Andalusia’s regional president Juanma Moreno said more bodies could still be found in the wreckage as recovery operations proceed. Authorities said more than 170 passengers were injured, including 24 seriously and five extremely seriously; national broadcaster RTVE reported that four of the seriously injured were minors. Some passengers remained trapped for hours, and the fire service described a difficult rescue in a hard-to-reach area with extensive destruction. Spanish rail operator Renfe said the Renfe train driver was among those killed. Officials said determining the cause of the crash is expected to take months.
