A What happened
Early Rain Covenant Church said police raided homes and the church office in Chengdu and detained nine people on Tuesday; five were released by Wednesday and four, including leader Li Yingqiang and his wife Zhang Xinyue, remained in detention. The church said the grounds for arrest and whether detainees have been charged were unclear, and it lost contact with two other members. In Wenzhou, authorities brought heavy machinery to take down part of the Yayang Church building, and ChinaAid said hundreds of armed and special police were deployed outside and nearby residents were driven away. Human Rights Watch said at least 24 Yayang Church members remained in custody from arrests in December, and Zion Church founder Ezra Jin remained in custody from arrests last October.
