The Arab region has been significantly affected by climate extremes, with 2024 marking its hottest year on record. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported that temperatures in the region rose nearly twice the global average, leading to severe heatwaves, droughts, and destructive storms. These conditions have intensified existing challenges such as water scarcity and economic fragility. The report highlights that many countries in the region are experiencing increased disasters, with an 83% rise in recorded events from 1980-1999 to 2000-2019. Urban areas are facing threats to energy, transport, and public health, while rural communities struggle with food production due to prolonged drought. Despite these challenges, nearly 60% of Arab countries have implemented early warning systems and are prioritizing water security strategies. The WMO stresses that immediate and collaborative action is essential to prevent the harsh climate of 2024 from becoming the new normal.
