EU suspends US poultry imports from new Rhode Island HPAI zone, re-authorises Canadian and Chilean zones

On 2 July 2026 the European Commission adopted Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1550, amending Annexes V and XIV to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/404 to suspend entry into the Union of poultry, germinal products of poultry, and fresh meat of poultry and game birds from a newly restricted US zone (US-2.1397, Providence County) following an HPAI outbreak, while re-authorising entry from previously suspended zones in Canada, Chile and the United States.
Why it matters
Entry into the Union of the covered poultry consignments is suspended from the new 10 km restricted zone US-2.1397 (Providence County) to protect the Union's animal-health status. Entry is re-authorised from previously suspended zones in Canada (CA-2.334–336, CA-2.338), Chile (CL-2.13, CL-2.14) and several US zones, following stamping-out, cleaning and disinfection and the Commission's assessment that those zones no longer threaten Union animal or public health. The Regulation entered into force the day after its 3 July 2026 publication, applies as a matter of urgency, and is directly applicable in all Member States; consignments must still meet the entry requirements of Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/692.
Implications
- — Member State border control posts must refuse entry to consignments of poultry, germinal products of poultry, and fresh meat of poultry and game birds originating in the new US restricted zone US-2.1397 (Providence County) from entry into force — admitting such consignments breaches the directly applicable Regulation.
- — Importers bringing the covered poultry products into the Union must re-check the amended Annex V and XIV zone listings before shipment: consignments from US-2.1397 are now blocked, while consignments from the re-authorised Canadian (CA-2.334–336, CA-2.338), Chilean (CL-2.13, CL-2.14) and listed US zones may again enter if they meet Delegated Regulation (EU) 2020/692 requirements — shipping against the superseded list risks refusal at the border.
