Sharavati Pumped Storage Project: Forest panel of MoEF defers proposal to divert forest land and decides to wait for site report
Why it matters
The proposed Sharavati Pumped Storage Project, intended to generate 2,000 MW of power, has faced a setback as the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) has deferred its proposal. The FAC is seeking further clarifications from the Karnataka government, particularly regarding the project's environmental impact. The project involves diverting 54.155 hectares of forest land in Sagar and Honnavar divisions. Concerns were raised during the FAC's meeting, particularly regarding the project's location within the Sharavati Valley Lion Tailed Macaque Wildlife Sanctuary. The committee has requested a comprehensive reply from the government and a Wildlife Mitigation Plan. Additionally, a sub-committee is expected to visit the site to assess the situation before any further decisions are made.
