SAIL's Bokaro Steel Plant produces special electrical steel for first time
Why it matters
The Bokaro Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has made a significant breakthrough by producing a special grade of electrical steel, marking the first time the company has developed this innovative material. The newly created electrical steel, which is 0.5 mm thick and classified as IS 18316 LS Grade Non-Grain Oriented (NGO), is designed for use in electric motors, generators, small power transformers, and hybrid and electric vehicles. This development is expected to improve energy efficiency and minimize operational losses. The production involved a specialized process with low carbon content for better ductility and high silicon content for enhanced magnetic properties. The achievement reflects SAIL's capability to innovate and expand its portfolio of high-value steel products, particularly for the power, automotive, and renewable energy sectors.
