On Feb 17, 2026, the Maharashtra government issued a Government Resolution cancelling the 5% reservation for Muslims in government/semi-government jobs and educational institutions and halting issuance of SBC(A) caste and non-creamy layer certificates to Muslims.
Maharashtra ends Muslim reservation category for public jobs and education
Why it matters
Muslim applicants can no longer claim the 5% quota in ongoing and upcoming recruitment and admissions that relied on SBC(A) certification, forcing immediate reclassification to open/other eligible categories. Departments and institutions must stop accepting new SBC(A) Muslim certificates and adjust seat/roster calculations and merit lists where the quota was being applied. The GR also removes the administrative pathway (certificate issuance) needed to reintroduce the quota without a fresh legal/policy instrument.
