Karnataka’s Health Department ordered all blood centres to secure NABH accreditation or NQAS certification within one year under a Government Order dated February 17, 2026, with NQAS mandated for government blood banks and NABH required for private blood banks.
Karnataka tightens quality compliance for blood banks
Why it matters
All ~260 blood banks in the state now face a fixed compliance deadline, forcing budget allocation, documentation upgrades, and audit readiness on a 12‑month clock. Private blood banks must plan for NABH (not NQAS), which can raise operating costs and create a near-term risk of service disruption if centres fail audits or cannot complete accreditation in time. For hospitals and large transfusion users, supplier qualification and continuity plans need updating because non-accredited centres may become non-viable vendors once enforcement begins.
