Iran has restricted maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
Why it matters
The restriction has collapsed routine daily transits and forced many vessels to reroute through Iranian territorial waters or avoid the channel. Passage is now riskier and normal flows of oil, gas and dry-bulk cargoes through the strait are materially reduced.
