Indonesia finalises procurement of BrahMos missiles from India
Why it matters
Indonesia is likely to initially procure one coastal-defence battery. A formal agreement is expected to be signed in the coming months. BrahMos is produced by BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited, a joint venture between India and Russia, and was jointly developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia’s NPOM. Indonesia is the second country after the Philippines to acquire the BrahMos system; India delivered the first batch to the Philippines in April 2024.
Implications
  • Acquisition will involve delivery and installation of at least one coastal-defence missile battery.
  • Naval and maritime forces will need to integrate supersonic cruise-missile operations into force planning, tactics, and training.
  • Procurement will require logistics, maintenance, and sustainment arrangements with BrahMos Aerospace and associated defence partners.
  • Existing export precedent (Philippines delivery in April 2024) informs delivery and support arrangements.
Who is affected
  • Indonesian defence ministry
  • Indonesian naval and maritime forces
  • BrahMos Aerospace and Indian defence exporters
  • DRDO and Russia’s NPOM
What to watch
