China rejects three Indian rice shipments

Change
China rejected three shipments of Indian non-Basmati rice, alleging the presence of genetically modified organisms.
China rejects three Indian rice shipments
Why it matters
China turned away three Indian non-Basmati rice consignments on grounds of alleged GMO presence despite those consignments having been tested and cleared earlier by a Chinese agency. India has not authorized commercial cultivation of any GM food crops, with GM cotton the only approved GM crop. Affected companies have raised the matter with APEDA and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Indian non-Basmati rice exports to China totaled 180,805 tonnes worth $79.43 million in 2024–25.
Implications
  • · The three consignments are barred from entering China, generating immediate shipment delays and lost export value for the affected exporters.
  • · Exporters and Indian export bodies (APEDA, ICAR) must allocate time and resources to resolve the rejections, increasing administrative and compliance workload.
  • · The action functions as an import constraint similar to past non-tariff barriers China applied to Indian rice, affecting trade flows that were previously limited before 2019–20.
Who is affected
  • · Exporters
  • · Regulators
  • · Importers
