India mandates star labels for appliances

Creates a compliance requirement that requires manufacturers, importers and sellers to obtain certification and display official energy-efficiency star labels on the covered appliances, constraining product marketing and sale.

Change
The government made energy-efficiency star labelling mandatory from January 1 for refrigerators, televisions, LPG gas stoves, cooling towers, chillers, deep freezers, distribution transformers and grid-connected solar inverters.
Why it matters
A Bureau of Energy Efficiency gazette notification makes star labelling compulsory for a specified list of appliances effective January 1. The mandatory list includes frost-free and direct-cool refrigerators, deep freezers, colour and ultra-high-definition televisions, LPG gas stoves, cooling towers, chillers, distribution transformers and grid-connected solar inverters. Items that were previously under voluntary labelling, including certain refrigerators and televisions, are now covered by the mandatory rule. A draft regulation for these appliances was published in July 2025 for public feedback, and earlier mandatory items have had their efficiency norms upgraded.
Implications
  • Certification and official star labels are required on covered appliance models prior to sale.
