European Commission does not renew cypermethrin approval for wood preservatives

EU operators must stop placing cypermethrin-treated wood articles on market from 22 Dec 2026

Change
The European Commission did not renew cypermethrin approval for biocidal product-type 8 and set a market-placement stop date for treated wood articles.
Why it matters
The decision removes the active-substance approval route for cypermethrin in wood-preservative biocidal products. Manufacturers, importers and distributors have a transition window, but treated articles incorporating cypermethrin for wood preservation cannot be placed on the EU market from 22 December 2026.
Implications
  • Manufacturers of cypermethrin-treated wood articles must stop placing those articles on the EU market from 22 December 2026 — the Commission did not renew the product-type 8 active-substance approval.
  • Importers and distributors of treated wood articles must identify stock treated with or intentionally incorporating cypermethrin for wood preservation — such articles cannot be placed on the EU market after the transition deadline.
  • Biocidal-product compliance teams must update product and treated-article approval checks for product-type 8 — cypermethrin no longer has renewed approval under Regulation (EU) No 528/2012.
