Why it matters
The GMR Group is constructing a Greenfield International Airport at Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, under a Public Private Partnership model. This airport will feature the world's largest Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) unit, as announced by GMR Group founder G M Rao. The project is expected to be completed by June 2026, six months ahead of schedule. The airport will initially accommodate six million passengers annually and is designed to be scalable. Additionally, an integrated aerospace ecosystem will be developed on 500 acres, aimed at attracting global aerospace and defense manufacturers. This initiative is anticipated to create numerous job opportunities for the local youth and empower the region economically.
