The United Nations told the UN Security Council that UNHCR has assumed camp management responsibilities at al-Hol in north-eastern Syria, a site holding thousands of people with alleged links to Islamic State. The change followed the withdrawal of Kurdish-led forces that had been running the camp as Syrian government forces advanced, leading to unrest, reports of residents rushing the perimeter in an apparent escape attempt, and looting that forced aid agencies to suspend operations. UN official Edem Wosornu said Syrian forces have established a security perimeter and the UN is working with Syrian authorities to restore humanitarian access. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said conditions remain tense and volatile and humanitarian operations are still suspended after the violence. also notes a ceasefire agreement that has brought much of Syria’s north-east under Damascus’s control, ending years of autonomous Kurdish rule.
