Top India solar exporter rejigs supply chain to bypass US tariff
Why it matters
Waaree Energies, a prominent solar panel manufacturer in India, is adapting its supply chain to navigate the challenges posed by high US import tariffs. The company is sourcing solar cells from countries with lower tariffs to ensure it can continue supplying to the US, which represents nearly 60% of its total orders. This strategic move is based on a 2012 US customs ruling that allows solar panels to be classified based on the origin of the cells used in their production. Waaree's CEO, Amit Paithankar, expressed confidence in this approach, stating that a well-configured supply chain can help sidestep the current high tariffs. The company is also expanding its manufacturing capabilities in the US, with plans to double the capacity of its Houston plant and invest significantly in local operations, reflecting its commitment to the US market despite ongoing trade tensions.
