Tamil Nadu DGP appointment put back on a court-set clock
Why it matters
The Supreme Court has ordered the State to complete the regular DGP/HoPF appointment within three weeks, compressing decision time for the government and the UPSC. The UPSC must return a three-name shortlist within two weeks of receiving the panel, forcing a near-term leadership decision. The eventual appointee is required to get a minimum two-year tenure regardless of superannuation date, limiting the State’s ability to use short-term or stopgap appointments.
