Syria’s defence ministry said Syrian Arab Army units have taken control of the al-Tanf base near the Iraq and Jordan borders following the withdrawal of US troops, citing coordination between Syrian and US sides.

The US drawdown removes a long-standing coalition foothold at a key border junction, changing deconfliction and access assumptions for any operations or monitoring in the al-Tanf area. Syrian forces’ stated deployment along the Syria–Iraq–Jordan border shifts local control of cross-border movement and security screening to Damascus-aligned units. Any remaining coalition activity tied to counter-ISIL logistics and detainee handling in the region must now route through alternative bases and partners.
