Speeding, not bike racing, caused fatal Peters Road flyover accident: Chennai traffic police
Why it matters
On the night of November 5, 2025, a tragic accident occurred on the Peters Road flyover in Chennai, claiming the lives of two motorcyclists, 19-year-old Syed Sardar Basha and 49-year-old Kumaran. The Greater Chennai City Traffic Police (GCTP) reported that the accident was caused by Basha riding at high speed and recklessly, rather than engaging in bike racing. Basha lost control of his motorcycle, which had a 155cc engine, and collided with Kumaran's Honda Shine. Another motorcyclist, Mohammed Suhail, who was riding behind Basha, sustained minor injuries after crashing into the fallen vehicle. The police emphasized that the incident was not related to illegal racing, and they are implementing measures to monitor and curb such activities, including increased checks on vehicles and workshops involved in illegal modifications.
