Why it matters
JSW Energy Limited has officially commissioned India's largest green hydrogen plant located in Vijayanagar, Karnataka. This facility is a crucial part of India's clean energy transition, established under the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Production Linked Incentive Scheme. The plant will supply green hydrogen to JSW Steel's Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) unit, facilitating the production of low-carbon steel and decreasing the industry's fossil fuel dependency. Under a seven-year agreement, JSW Energy will provide 3,800 tons per annum of green hydrogen and 30,000 tons of green oxygen to JSW Steel, with plans to increase this supply significantly by 2030. The project is a milestone in India's goal to produce 5 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030. JSW Energy aims to enhance its generation capacity and energy storage while committing to carbon neutrality by 2050.
