Why it matters
Indonesia said it removed its restriction on xAI’s chatbot Grok after receiving a letter from X describing concrete measures to improve the service and prevent misuse, according to the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. The ministry’s digital space monitoring director general, Alexander Sabar, characterized the decision as conditional and said the ban could be reinstated if further violations are found. Indonesia’s earlier ban followed reports that Grok was used to generate large volumes of nonconsensual sexualized imagery on X, including content involving real women and minors; Malaysia and the Philippines lifted similar bans on January 23.
