Govt. permits leasing of assigned land to renewable energy companies in Andhra Pradesh
Why it matters
In a recent Cabinet meeting, the Andhra Pradesh government approved a policy allowing the leasing of assigned lands to renewable energy companies. This decision is part of broader revenue reforms aimed at supporting small and marginal farmers. The state has approximately 36.36 lakh acres of assigned land, with about 26.43 lakh acres eligible for leasing to companies involved in solar, wind, and biogas projects. Farmers leasing their land can expect to earn between ₹30,000 and ₹40,000 per acre annually, with a 5% increase every two years. Additionally, unemployed family members will be prioritized for jobs in these renewable energy projects. The initiative is designed to uplift poor farmers and position Andhra Pradesh as a hub for renewable energy.
