France raises purchase taxes on heavier, higher-emitting cars

France will tighten its vehicle weight and CO₂ purchase-tax schedule from 2026, lowering the weight-tax exemption threshold and steepening progressive charges that can add tens of thousands of dollars to some internal-combustion models’ registered prices.
France raises purchase taxes on heavier, higher-emitting cars
Why it matters
From Jan 1, 2026, more vehicles will fall into the weight tax as the exemption threshold drops to roughly 3,307 pounds, increasing upfront costs for many ICE models at registration. The CO₂ tax now starts at a rating of 108 and escalates sharply in the ~150–180 band, creating purchase-price step-changes that can push combined taxes toward the vehicle’s base price for heavier, higher-emitting trims. From July 1, France adds a battery-mass deduction (~1,323 pounds) and an ADEME-based “Eco Score” that can penalize EVs with carbon-intensive production/logistics, shifting sourcing and model-allocation decisions for OEMs selling into France.
