The European Commission disbursed €1 billion ($1.16 billion) to Egypt in budgetary support under a partnership agreement signed in 2024. The commission said the payment was the second disbursement in support totaling €5 billion and was subject to several conditions. A commission press release said Egypt implemented reforms to strengthen economic stability, took steps toward respecting democratic mechanisms, and stayed on track with reforms required by the IMF. Activists said suppression of critical voices continued, with arbitrary arrests, harsh prison terms in unfair trials, and extrajudicial executions continuing with almost complete impunity.
