City of Pearls reclaims its crown as Hyderabad Pearls move one step closer to GI tag
Why it matters
Hyderabad is taking steps to secure a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for its famous pearls, a move that highlights the city's rich history in pearl craftsmanship. The application was filed on November 8, 2025, by Subhajit Saha, with support from local associations and the Telangana government. The city, known as the 'City of Pearls,' has a legacy dating back to the Qutb Shahi dynasty and the Nizams, who imported pearls and developed a thriving industry. Despite a decline in natural pearl availability, Hyderabad artisans have adapted by processing cultured and hybrid pearls. The GI tag aims to protect these artisanal practices from mass production and reaffirm the city's status in the jewellery market. Mr. Saha emphasized that Hyderabad Pearls represent centuries of craftsmanship and cultural exchange, and the GI tag will help preserve this legacy while boosting local economies.
