The Indian government has announced an increase in the number of workdays under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to 150 days for Jammu and Kashmir for the financial year 2025-26. This decision follows a recommendation from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare to extend employment benefits in areas affected by natural disasters such as floods and landslides. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for this initiative. The increase aims to provide additional employment opportunities to rural households, particularly in the 1,962 panchayats declared flood-affected. This measure is expected to enhance livelihood security, alleviate economic distress, and create durable assets in the region.
