Why it matters
The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Dharwad (IIIT-D) has been chosen to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Quantum AI and Computing, marking a significant step in advancing quantum research outside Bengaluru. The state government has sanctioned ₹18 crore for the development of a state-of-the-art quantum research laboratory. This initiative is part of the LEAP (Local Economy Accelerator Programme) and aligns with the Union Government’s National Quantum Mission. The CoE will introduce a two-year minor program in Quantum AI and Computing for engineering students and offer training for science graduates and industry professionals. The goal is to develop quantum applications in sectors like healthcare, finance, and cybersecurity, while training 1,000 specialists in the field. The initiative aims to strengthen the IT ecosystem in cities beyond Bengaluru, fostering innovation and research in quantum computing.
