Assam to be part of global semiconductor ecosystem in 2026: Nirmala Sitharaman reviews plant's progress
Why it matters
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the Tata Electronics OSAT centre in Jagiroad, Assam, marking a pivotal moment in the state's ambition to become a hub for semiconductor manufacturing by 2026. This facility is part of India's broader semiconductor mission, which aims to enhance the country's technological capabilities and economic security. The project, with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore, is projected to produce 48 million semiconductor chips daily and create around 15,000 direct jobs along with 11,000-13,000 indirect jobs. Sitharaman emphasized the importance of semiconductors in modern technology and encouraged local entrepreneurs and students to engage with the emerging industrial opportunities. The initiative aligns with the government's Production Linked Incentive scheme, which has already committed substantial funds to various semiconductor projects across India.
