UN Security Council lifts sanctions on Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa
Why it matters
The Security Council voted to remove UN sanctions on Ahmed al-Sharaa. The vote also removed UN sanctions on Interior Minister Anas Khattab. Sharaa had been sanctioned for his role as leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which the United States removed from its list of foreign terror groups in July. Sharaa was named transitional president after a rebel offensive in December 2024 and is scheduled to visit the White House next week.
Implications
  • UN member states and sanctions implementation bodies are no longer required to apply UN sanctions measures to Ahmed al-Sharaa and Anas Khattab.
  • Diplomatic missions and foreign ministries are no longer constrained by UN-level sanctions when engaging with Ahmed al-Sharaa and Anas Khattab.
