Government extends EV bus and truck motor deadline
Why it matters
A Ministry of Heavy Industries notification dated March 13 sets September 1 as the revised effective date for local manufacture of traction motors used in electric buses and trucks. From that date, local-assembly requirements cover magnet fitment, rotor and stator assembly fitment, shaft and bearing fitment, enclosure fitment, and connectors and cables fitment. The notification covers traction motors integrated with transmissions and traction motors with inverters for e-trucks where applicable. Earlier deadlines had been March 1 for electric bus makers and March 3 for electric truck makers. The PM E-Drive scheme links incentives to the Phased Manufacturing Programme and allocates ₹10,900 crore with specified subsidy rates and caps for electric trucks and buses.
Implications
  • Manufacturers can import traction motors using rare-earth magnets and remain eligible for PM E-Drive incentives for eligible buses and trucks through September 1.
  • Incentive claims after September 1 are subject to meeting the specified local-assembly tasks for traction motors.
