European Parliament approves deportation of migrants to designated 'safe' third countries
Why it matters
The measure passed by a vote of 396–226. Member states can send asylum seekers to third countries they transited through if those countries are deemed to respect 'international standards' for migrant treatment. Member states can also deport asylum seekers to 'safe' third countries with which they have no prior ties if an agreement is reached with the host state. The rules are expected to take effect in June 2026.
Implications
  • Transit countries deemed to respect 'international standards' become eligible destinations for transfers.
  • Bilateral agreements with third countries can establish deportation destinations even where no prior ties exist.
