Junta-led Parliament in Burkina Faso dissolved all political parties and suspended their activities.
Why it matters
Junta-led Parliament voted to dissolve all political parties and suspend their activities. Party activities had been suspended since the military rulers seized power more than three years ago. Authorities unveiled the dissolution plan two weeks before the report and the presidency said the proliferation of parties had led to abuses, fuelled divisions and weakened the social fabric. Under Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who led a coup in September 2022, the junta has muzzled critics, arresting dissidents or forcing them into fighting jihadists; a transition to democratic rule initiated after a January 2022 coup had been scheduled to end in July 2024.
